Responsible Person (NDT) - Radiation Safety Responsibilities - SA

This course starts with the basics of radiation protection: what it is ALARA and how do we apply the principles of justification, optimisation and limitation in the application of radiation sources, what are the radiation protection strategies that help us to develop strategies to keep radiation doses within limits and as low as reasonably achievable.  

Then we will focus on the roles and responsibilities of the key persons within the organisation: what are these roles and how do their responsibilities differ both functionally and legislatively?

Finally, we will address the Responsible Person's role under the legislation and Codes of Practice across the life of the radiation source: what requirements does the Responsible Person have under the Industrial Radiography Code, the Transport Code and the Security Code, requirements for radiation management and other plans, record keeping, emergency response and disposal or radiation sources at the end of their useful life.

Describe the fundamental principles underpinning radiation protection within a workplace:

• Explain the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle in radiation protection.
• Describe the application of justification, optimisation, and limitation in radiation work.
• Identify the three strategies of radiation protection (time, distance, shielding).
• Define dose and dose limits for occupational exposure.

Describe the role and responsibilities of the key persons within an NDT company:

• Responsible Person.
• Industrial Radiographer.
• Industrial Radiography Assistant.
• Radiation Safety Officer.

Describe the Responsible Person's role in the application of the legislation and Codes of Practice:

• Describe the requirements that the Industrial Radiography Code*, the Transport Code* and the Security Code* place on the Responsible Person.
• Identify the requirements for: a radiation management plan, transport radiation protection programme, source security plan including a source transport security plan.
• Describe the responsibilities and requirements for maintaining records, including that of personal monitoring.
• Describe the role of the Responsible Person following a radiation emergency.
• Identify requirements of the Responsible Person when disposing of a radiation source.
