Responsible Person (NDT) - Radiation Safety Responsibilities - WA

This course is designed to assist the Responsible Person* in an NDT organisation to fulfil their responsibilities for minimising radiation exposures arising from their operations. It provides information on legislative responsibilities, including those detailed in relevant Codes of Practice.

This course provides a broad overview of the breadth of the responsibilities, giving the Responsible Person the opportunity to consider whether the organisation has addressed the key issues.

Foundations of Radiation Safety

This course is designed to provide foundational information on the types of radiation, its sources, effects, and measures to reduce risks.

It is suitable for employees across different sectors who may encounter radiation sources, including healthcare, research, and industrial workplaces, but who may not directly use a radiation source. Due to the nature of their work, these employees may not require a licence themselves but be working within an environment and a structured radiation management system with licenced operators who perform and supervise radiation activities.

Overview of Radiation Safety Responsibilities

The module provides an overview of the radiation safety responsibilities under Planned Exposure Code* and the terminology used to describe their approval requirements under the different states / territories.

Radiation Safety For an Accredited NDT Laboratory

The course provides an opportunity to refresh radiation protection and safety knowledge and the requirements of the Industrial Radiography Code*, the Transport Code* and the Security Code*. Over time previously learned information can fade, poor habits can creep in, and some skills can diminish.

The Planned Exposure Code* requires the Responsible Person to provide refresher training to minimise this (and the operator to participate). IAEA SSG-11 requires radiation safety and protection refresher training to be typically given at intervals of less than two
years but not exceeding five years. Under ISO 9712 there is also a requirement for continuing professional development through the structured credit system used in renewal. Non-conformances may also have been identified through an audit for an accredited NDT laboratory (such as NATA). This training course provides an opportunity to help with satisfying these requirements.

This very abbreviated course is to provide the Regulator with a snapshot of the Radiation Training system. While the Regulator can complete a full course, this sample version will provide insight into the modular structure, the use of knowledge checks to test learning throughout a module and the end of module tests.

Industrial Radiography Assistant - WA

The Industrial Radiography Assistants Course provides foundational radiation protection and radiation safety knowledge. It allows participants to work under the direct and immediate supervision of a licenced RT2 technician when performing radiographic inspections (using x-ray and gamma sources) in various industrial settings.

Note that this course only applies to WA as other jurisdictions require an Assistant to hold a full licence (which this course is not aimed at).

Assistants are not required to complete this course as a pre-requisite to being recognised as an Assistant. They can choose to undergo self-study using the study notes provided on the Radiological Council website and then sit the exam. However, completing this course now prepares you well for the course approved as a pre-requisite for a full licence (and for which you will already have had exposure to a number of the modules).
